Middle School Challenge
The Middle School Challenge (MSC) is a program that was started in 1995 with 100 participants in five middle schools, and it has grown to have five waves dedicated specifically to the middle schools. The program was developed to encourage 6th, 7th, and 8th grade school participation in after school fitness programs and a life long commitment to fitness. We hope to demonstrate to students that physical fitness is fun and is something that everyone can participate in regardless of their age or physical limitations.

We are anticipating 1500 to 2000 students from more than 30 schools from within Boulder County, Denver, Yuma and more. The students will train along side their teachers for 6-8 weeks to prepare for their 6.2 mile walk, jog, run or race. Students in the MSC will receive a $5 discount, a unique Middle School Challenge T-shirt and a goody bag containing items donated by race sponsors.
Participating schools are divided into three divisions based on school size:
Division I - 1 - 200 students
Division II - 201-550 students
Division III - more than 551 students
There are two competitions in the Middle School Challenge:
Participation Champion
Each division will have a champion based on how many students and teachers/ staff take part in the Bolder Boulder. Parents and siblings are encouraged to join students in the middle school waves, but they will not count toward the participation award.
Scoring is determined by taking the amount of participating students and teachers/staff, divided by the total enrollment of the school (plus total # of teachers and staff working at the school). Please keep in mind - to ensure a thorough scoring process, students, teachers, and staff must fill out the special, yellow MSC form. The award for the school is a framed BolderBOULDER poster with a plaque stating Participation Champion for their respective division and bragging rights to the other schools in their division.
Seagate Technology, a corporate sponsor of BolderBOULDER, is awarding a hard drive to the school with the highest percentage of students and faculty participating in the Middle School Challenge. One of Seagate's latest products, the 80-gigabyte Barracuda ATA IV is valued at $120.
Fastest School
Each division will have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes. The fastest two boys and girls from each grade will have their times combined to produce their school's score. The school with the lowest combined time will win. In past years, some schools have not qualified for this competition for not having the proper amount of participants in each grade.
The award for the school is a framed BolderBOULDER poster with a plaque stating 1st, 2nd or 3rd fastest school.

Several start waves will be reserved for Middle School Challenge participants including waves for running/jogging, jog/walking, and walking. These waves are for the students, their parents, friends and siblings. However, students and teachers/staff taking part in the MSC do not have to do the BolderBOULDER in these waves. Many MSC participant's times are fast enough to qualify for the seeded waves. If the participant decides they would rather run in a non- MSC wave (qualifying wave) they will still be counted in the MSC with their school.
The MSC Director is available to visit schools in order to present information about the MSC and to motivate students, teachers, and staff to participate. Training assistance will be provided. MSC registration will be handled separately from the regular registration, and will be tailored to each school's specific needs.
The MSC's long term goal is to spark a lifetime interest in fitness and good health.
